"I Can Spy” is a great activity to work on students’ describing skills. Many students will want to just describe an object using its color, such as “I can spy something red.” This “I Can Spy” activity pushes students to learn new ways to describe objects. Each card below prompts students to describe objects in other ways, such as category, shape, and size. All of these ways of describing are part of semantic feature analysis. This skill is a research-backed way of increasing a student’s vocabulary skills.
You can use this activity to target expressive or receptive language. If you would like to target receptive language, simply reverse roles. You describe an object to your students, and they have to pick out which word you are describing.
This product is ideal for sessions in classrooms, small groups, or one-on-one settings.
